HI there,

STEP INSIDE THE INNERCIRCLE:

your monthly recap to stay connected with the world of Smart tech and Smart life.

TURNING THE CORNER

As we turn the corner on 2022 there’s never a shortage of reflections and predictions to go around. From Spotify Wrapped to Top Nines Instagram photo collages, the end of the year gives us all the nostalgic feels – and gets us excited for the year in technology ahead.

Maybe there is World Cup soccer on the mind, but among the Amazon CTO’s predictions for 2023 is the lure of cloud-based Smart technology to redefine not only the fan experience but measure athletic performance in entirely new ways. Among Dell’s COO’s predictions is the rise of “Zero Trust” architectures that are set to transform the way companies secure their digital environments. Senior Gartner analysts suggest that Smart technology must be deployed to drive sustainability and ESG demands by investors across the board.

From Smart energy to Smart offices to automation to driverless tech to AI’s deepening role in so many industries, 2023 is set to be another big year for technology transformation.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, before the year is up, don’t forget to break shortbread with someone on National Cookie Exchange Day (December 22) – or at the very least give a buddy a ring on National Call a Friend Day (December 28). Showing up for someone might just be the best gift you can give.

It’s been a busy year for us at InnerSpace, and what better way to reflect on all the areas we’ve explored over the past year than to recap some of our most popular posts from the past year. ICYMI, check these three winners out!

How workplace design improves productivity

An InnerSpace study: Using spatial intelligence to learn employee behavior

What kind of data do I need to make decisions about my workspace?

ANSWERS TO SQUARE FOOTAGE NEEDS CAN BE FOUND IN YOUR WI-FI NETWORK

In the 80s, office layouts favored private offices but in the 90s and 2000s, trends tilted toward the cubicle. As it did, average sq ft needs per employee dropped from 250 to 175. The 2010s ushered in more open office styles, and space needs slipped to 120 sq ft per employee. Now amidst this decade’s great hybrid experiment, the answer to sq ft needs is only a question mark.

Determining the answers means using expensive office space to its maximum benefit, and trying to rationalize one’s real estate portfolio. Where guesswork will fail, precision strategies will prevail. In this recent blog we explore why Wi-Fi is the key to unlocking the spatial intelligence needed to root out much-needed answers.

SPACE UTILIZATION ADMIST A CHALLENGING REAL ESTATE MARKET

There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, and the workplace environment is no exception. Rising interest rates and inflation, a looming recession and ongoing challenges with employee engagement contribute to a blurry picture in the commercial real estate market.

For business owners and office managers, knowing how to make changes to your space to accommodate growth or downsizing, leverage under-used meeting rooms, or ensure resources are meeting your employees’ needs can be stressful – and expensive, if decisions are made without the right insights.

Read more in our latest post about how InnerSpace uses Indoorlogy to remove the guesswork and ensure your hybrid work space works – even amidst uncertainty.

NEW IN SMART TECH

  • At the start of December, 19,000 participants jointed the IoT Tech Expo Global event in London, featuring speakers from a host of tech giants and experts in the field of the Internet of Things. Plenty of Smart tech on the table, and you can review some of the key conversations in this story.

  • Dynamic pricing… radical fast food… Smart kitchens… omnichannel ordering: innovators weigh in on the tech trends coming to the world of restaurants.

  • This article from Stanford shows how non-profit organizations are deploying cloud-based Smart tech to be able to direct resources where they are needed most.

  • Turning “buildings into Teslas” says a New York clean energy company CEO that is bringing all-electric Smart heating/cooling/hot water systems to aging buildings in lower-income communities. The innovation is saving building owners as much as 40% a year.

  • Technology in health-care is certainly on a steep uphill trajectory. One of the newest startups, here in InnerSpace’s hometown of Toronto, is Stabl – which brings Smart post-operative rehabilitation into the home for those who must build back strength and mobility. Never a bad omen to raise $1M in a pre-seed round of funding, is it? Their demo here
